GOOD NEWS:  Nonstop flight to London to start in April at Charleston airport

Staff reports  | British Airways has announced plans for new, nonstop air service between Charleston and London’s Heathrow Airport. The twice-weekly flight, slated to start in April 2019, marks the first transatlantic passenger flight from the Lowcountry and the State of South Carolina.

“We are ushering in a new day for this region and our state as we launch this flight to a premier European destination,” said Paul Campbell, CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority.

GOOD NEWS: C of C to host discussion on political civility

Staff reports  |  The College of Charleston will host a political discussion entitled The Great Divide: Political Civility Past and Present at 6 p.m. Oct. 9  in the Sottile Theatre.

Political veterans from across the Carolinas will share stories of controversy and collaboration in policymaking as well as their experiences in working across the aisle for the good of the country. The discussion will allow for reflection on how politics has changed over time, from an era of cooperation to an era of conflict.

Staff reports  |  Lowcountry On the Table, the community-wide discussion held at hundreds of locations across the region on Oct .4, will offer “Spark Grants” of up to $500 to people who want a little help to get a great idea going.

And it’s pretty darned easy to apply.  Instead of being burdened with a bunch of bureaucratic mumbo jumbo, all you have to do is make a short video on your cell phone of what you want to do and send it to the fine folks at Lowcountry On the Table.

Staff reports  |  You’re encouraged to host a small-group discussion in your home, at your church, in a local restaurant or in a library anytime on Oct. 4 to take part in Lowcountry On The Table, a citizen-driven process to identify issues and suggest solutions.

Organizers of the tri-county event, the Library Foundation of the Lowcountry, are hoping to engage thousands of area residents in what could be considered a huge local focus group to provide input to local nonprofits and governments on what people believe really matters in the Lowcountry.

Staff reports  |   Clemson University will host the world energy conference for the first time in the United States in November in North Charleston.

The IEEE Electronic Power Grid (eGRID) Conference , which will take place Nov. 12-14,  will unite several of the globe’s leading energy experts from government, industry and academia so they can share ideas, problems and solutions to the planet’s energy challenges.

GOOD NEWS: North Charleston library design to be unveiled Aug. 27

Staff reports  |   Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will host a community meeting y p.m. Aug. 27 to updated designs for the R. Keith Summey North Charleston Library that will replace the Cooper River Memorial Library.

Local residents overwhelmingly approved a referendum in November 2014 to build five new Charleston County Public Library branches and upgrade 13 others.

GOOD NEWS: S.C.’s Twiggs wins Gibbes’ 1858 Prize

Staff reports  |  Orangeburg artist and arts educator Leo Twiggs has won the $10,000 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, according to the Gibbes Museum of Art and its 1858 Society.  A formal announcement reportedly will be made today.

A painter born in 1934 in St. Stephen, S.C., who works with wax and batik, Twiggs is the first South Carolinian to win the prize, awarded since 2008.

NEWS BRIEFS: Red Cross has emergency need for more blood

Staff reports  |  While thousands of people have responded to an emergency call by the American Red Cross for blood and platelet donations, there continues to be an emergency need for donors of all blood types, especially type O, to give now to address a severe blood shortage.

According to a press release, Red Cross blood donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in, and right now there is less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to keep a five-day supply of blood to meet the needs of patients and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood products.

Staff reports  |  The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) is celebrating writing this week through Aug. 4 with  the Write On! Literacy Festival with talks with  authors, workshops and other writing activities.

On July 28, the festival included the first OtrantoCon 2018, a free event for all ages who love anime, comics, science, fiction, fantasy and cosplay, at the Otranto Road Regional Branch.
